Having time-management skills means effectively organizing daily tasks, arriving on time and completing projects within their deadline. The UWSP Office of Student Health Promotion states that using your time wisely can be challenging if your schedule is full and you have multiple things to get done each day. If you have poor time-management skills the effects can be damaging to both your personal and business lifestyle. Setting goals will help keep time management in perspective.

Goal Setting

It is important to set goals so you can stay focused and have something to work toward. Goal setting can be both short term or long term. The Mind Tools website explains that having goals gives you long term vision and the motivation you need in the short term. A short-term goal can be part of a long term goal except in achieved in a shorter time frame. Setting goals will help you manage your time wisely and keep projects in perspective.

Failure to Meet Deadlines

If you are unable to manage your time wisely you may find yourself not meeting important deadlines. This could be because you do not have an organizational tool or day planner that helps you pre-plan your day. Not meeting deadlines at work can carry serious consequences such as being placed on probation or being terminated. This can be rectified by making a to do list of things that you need to complete to get each project done.

Prioritize

If there is a multitude of tasks, break each one down and focus one at a time so you are less like to run into a snag. Prioritizing what needs to be done and completing the biggest tasks first will help everything else come together. Set up multiple reminders through your computer desktop, mobile phone and with handwritten notes so you are constantly reminded of things that need to get done.

Running Late

Running late also ties in with having poor time management skills. If you are unorganized or not keeping track of your time with one project or event, chances are it will spill over into your business and personal life. Running late means you are either not allowing yourself enough time to finish a task or you are wasting time with something other than the task at hand. Always give yourself extra time throughout the day to plan for unforeseen emergencies and issues. This will allow you to be ahead of schedule or finish another task in between appointments or events.

Disorganization

Being disorganized can lead to a cluttered environment and a cluttered mind. It can also have devastating effects on your time management skills. If your office or desk has piles of papers, bills and projects that are not in any type of order, it can be difficult to find what you are looking for. This can take away from valuable time that you could be using to get something done. Keeping your desk clean and free of extra papers, trash or non work items will help you focus better. Creating a filing system that is hidden but easily accessible will present a refined and functional.
