Father's Day storms the United States on the third Sunday of June, right around the summer solstice when daylight hours are at their longest. If you happen to be in Miami, Florida on Father's Day, take advantage of the daylight by treating dad (or yourself) to all of what Miami has to offer active and health-conscious individuals. Those activities can include a jog along the beach boardwalk, a bike ride through colorful neighborhoods or a healthful meal eaten on a sunny patio.
Go Golfing
Father's Day is a great time to hit the links in Miami because most snowbirds vacate Miami by June and tourism is lower. The county operates six golf courses in the Miami area that are open to the public. The West Course at the Country Club of Miami is a challenge for experienced golfers, but for a more relaxing game, check out the course at Haulover Golf Course. Book your tee time online to ensure your spot at any of the Miami-Dade County golf courses. All courses provide carts for people with disabilities.
Play on the Beach
Miami beaches are not only good for soaking up the sun, but also provide opportunities for surfing, jogging and swimming. Haulover Park provides 1.5 miles of shoreline and is staffed with lifeguards who can help advise on the current water conditions. For a more leisurely swimming experience, check out the man-made atoll pool at Matheson Hammock Park. Haulover and Crandon beaches are accessible by people who utilize wheelchairs.
Take a Bicycle Ride
Bike trails are in abundance in Miami. The five-mile Commodore Trail starts at 42nd and Edgewater and heads northeast near the coastline, passing by sightseers' delights such as the Barnacle Historic State Park and Miami City Hall. Rickenbacker Trail starts on the mainland and passes over Powell and Bear Cut bridges onto Key Biscayne. The 8.5-mile trail ends near Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park and passes the University of Miami.
Take a Sailing Lesson
Travel by boat is popular in Miami. At the Matheson Hammock Marina, you can take a sailing lesson at the Castle Harbor Sailing School. The school provides American Sailing Association certification to participants who can pass the written test. Check the schedule to see what classes are provided on Father's Day, and register in advance to ensure your spot.
Eat Light
Hot Miami days in June may make appetite wane, but that does not mean you cannot find a good meal for Father's Day. Miami is home to many restaurants serving light meals for the epicure. Giardino Gourmet Salads has a simple menu of fancy salads with seven locations in the Miami area. OmGarden serves lunches and dinners that are raw, vegan and organic. Shortened Sunday hours means you will have to catch lunch if you want a healthful Father's Day meal. Catch dinner on Father's Day at the East City Grill, where local produce and seafood amply grace the menu.
Be Prepared
Your Father's Day in Miami falls during the summer season of South Florida, so be prepared for hot days with the chance of storms. The average temperatures for the month are in the lows of 75 degrees Fahrenheit and top out near 90 degrees. The chance of sunshine on Father's Day is 68 percent, which means you should come prepared with sunscreen and light-colored clothing. Schedule strenuous outings, like bike riding or runs, for morning or evening hours to keep out of the heat.
