Golfers want a caddy who knows the ropes. Remember basic rules and etiquette when caddying in order to give the golfer as much help as possible. Becoming a great caddy takes time and experience, but you should have an understanding of what a golfer expects from you before you hit the links.

Arrive Early

Do not be late for your tee time. Show up to the golf course ahead of time and meet the golfer for whom you will caddy. Caddies must keep track of many details, and depending on the experience of the golfer, the caddy should always be available to help when needed.

Carry the Golf Clubs Properly

Golf bags are heavy and require a strong back and legs. According to Golf-Information.info, rest the bag on the small of your back, and do not let the irons rattle around in the bag. Hold the clubs steady with your hand while you walk. Place the bag on the ground gently and as quietly as possible, and do not put the bag on the putting green.

Wash Golf Clubs and Balls

Players expect the caddy to keep the clubs clean and dry. Keep a wet towel and a dry towel at all times. Use a tee to clean dirt and mud from the small grooves on the head of the club. Ask the player if he wants the ball cleaned, and keep extra golf balls available at all times. Do not pick up a player's ball unless he tells you to.

Tend the Flagstick

Ask the golfer if he wants the flag in or out for longer putts. If the flag is left in, hold the flag so it does not flap in the wind, and wait until the golfer has putted before removing it from the hole. Stand still during putts, and put the flag back in the hole after everyone has made their putts.

Replace Divots

If a golfer takes a divot out of the grass during a shot, wait until she finishes the shot before moving to replace the divot. Golf-information.info suggests waiting until the golfers move toward their next shot before running to grab the piece of grass and replacing it. Replace all the divots your golfer makes and others if you have the time.
