Pristiq is a medication in a class of drugs known as serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, or SNRIs. It works by restoring the balance of certain natural substances in the brain, which helps to improve certain mood problems, according to Drugs.com. Pristiq is used for the treatment of major depressive disorder. It may take up to several weeks to feel the full effects of this medication. There are some side effects associated with Pristiq that users should be aware of prior to beginning treatment.

Drowsiness and Fatigue

Patients taking Pristiq 100mg may experience drowsiness and fatigue. These side effects may diminish over time as the body adjusts to this medication. The use of alcohol or other medications may increase these side effects. Those experiencing drowsiness and fatigue should use caution while driving or operating heavy machinery. Getting at least eight hours of sleep nightly and taking a midday nap may help you feel more refreshed throughout the day. Severe drowsiness and fatigue should be brought to the attention of a physician. In some cases, a change in medication dosage may be necessary.

Sexual Side Effects

Pristiq 100mg may cause sexual side effects in some patients. Symptoms may include decreased interest in sexual intercourse; inability to have or maintain erection; loss in sexual ability, desire, drive or performance; or an inability to achieve orgasm, reports MayoClinic.com. If these side effects become bothersome, they should be brought to the attention of a physician. Your doctor may recommend a change in medication or dosage or prescribe a medication intended to treat sexual dysfunction.

Constipation

Constipation is a common side effect of Pristiq 100mg. Making small dietary changes may help to prevent and alleviate constipation. Eating foods high in fiber along with ample fruits and vegetables may be beneficial. Drinking at least eight to 10 glasses of water each day and daily exercise may increase gastrointestinal transit time and decrease constipation. If dietary changes are unsuccessful, an over-the-counter stool softener or laxative as directed by a physician may help relieve constipation.
