According to Damaged Hair, a website dedicated to promoting hair health, the most common causes of damaged hair include chemical and heat treatments, such as permanents, coloring and bleach, as well as over-brushing, overuse of certain hair products and exposure to the sun. However, there are numerous natural treatments, also known as ayurvedic remedies, that can revitalize your hair.
Egg Yolks
According to Melanie A. Sachs, author of "Ayurvedic Beauty Care", egg yolks can be applied topically to the scalp and hair follicles to help repair dry, damaged hair. To use egg yolks, whisk two yolks in a small bowl or container for one to two minutes. Gently massage the yolks into the scalp and hair for four to five minutes. Wrap a towel around your shoulders to prevent the yolks from getting on your skin or clothes. Rinse your hair and scalp with cool water and shampoo with a gentle cleanser and moisturizing conditioner. This treatment can be repeated daily as long as no irritation to your scalp or skin occurs.
Beer and Citrus Juice
In "Back to Eden: Classic Guide to Herbal Medicine, Natural Food and Home Remedies Since 1939," author Jethro Kloss recommends using a mixture of beer and lemon or lime juice to help repair damaged hair. Mix 8 ounces of beer with 3 tablespoons juice in a large bowl or the basin of a clean sink. Tilt your head back and let your hair soak in the mixture for five to seven minutes before rinsing with cool water. Wash your hair with a gentle cleanser and avoid vigorous towel drying or using a blow dryer. The beer and citrus juice treatment can be repeated daily as long as it does not aggravate your scalp or skin.
Tea Tree Oil, Aloe Vera Gel and Lemon Juice
According to Vasant Lad, author of "The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies", a mixture of tea tree oil, aloe vera gel and lemon juice can be applied to the scalp and hair follicles to provide essential moisture and strength to heat damaged or dry hair. Mix 2 tablespoons tea tree oil, 3 tablespoons aloe vera gel and 1 tablespoon lemon juice in a small container. Gently massage the mixture into the hair and leave the mixture in for 15 to 20 minutes. Rinse with cool water and shampoo with a mild cleanser. This treatment can be used daily as long as no irritation occurs. Lad recommends using only pure tea tree oil, pure aloe vera gel and all-natural lemon juice for this treatment to maximize its effect.
