Psoriasis is a condition that causes the cells of the skin to grow too quickly. The end result of this is painful, itchy, red blotches that appear and cause irritation. When psoriasis takes place on the scalp, the same symptoms can be seen and it can range from mild to severe. Although there is no concrete cure for psoriasis, there are various treatment options available that can at least make it tolerable.
Step 1
Apply prescription creams. There are various topical solutions you can apply directly to your scalp to treat psoriasis. These are by prescription and so include dovonex, tazorec, taclonex and anthralin.
Step 2
Wash your hair with a coal tar shampoo. Coal tar is a substance that helps stop the growth of cells and promotes the sloughing off of scales. It can be found in special shampoos and it is generally used when scalp psoriasis is mild.
Step 3
Take some oral medications. There are several prescriptions your doctor can prescribe to you if your condition is moderate to severe. Some examples of these medications include cyclosporine, acetriten and methotrexate.
Step 4
Use ultraviolet light therapy. UV rays are shot down onto the top of the scalp to promote drying and healing. This works best with hair that is thin. If your hair is thick, you can part it and put it into rows, or you can shave your head to get the best results. Your doctor can recommend a UV device for use at home.
Step 5
Get injected. When the psoriasis is mild, injections can be administered by your doctor in the areas of the scalp where there are lesions. These injections consist of steroids which can also get into your system, so they are used in small doses.
