Phentermine Pills Information

Phentermine is a prescription drug classified as an appetite suppressant. It is said to be used for weight reduction in obese patients. Patients must use phentermine in conjunction with exercise, diet and behavior medication.

Dosage and Administration

The usual adult dose of phentermine is 8 milligrams, three times a day, administered 30 minutes before meals or food. Alternately, the patient may take 10 to 37.5 milligrams per day before breakfast, explains the Drug Information Handbook.

Action

Phentermine stimulates a gland in the brain, called the hypothalamus, resulting in a decrease in appetite.

Side Effects

Side effects of phentermine include dizziness, dry mouth, constipation, changes in sex drive, high blood pressure, increased heart rate and restlessness. Patients should report side effects to a physician.

Warnings

Phentermine should be used with caution if you have cardiovascular disease, mild hypertension, bipolar disorder, diabetes and seizure disorders. If this is the case, Drug Information Online explains that you may need an adjustment in dose.

Contraindications

Patients who have advanced hardening of the arteries, moderate to severe hypertension, overactive thyroid and advanced cardiovascular disease should not be prescribed phentermine. Phentermine is also contraindicated in patients with a history of drug abuse.
