If you frequently color, perm, straighten, blow dry or use hairspray or gel, your hair may be damaged. Damaged hair often can be dry and brittle. To make your hair feel smooth and silky again, infuse your hair with moisture. There are plenty of natural remedies to try.
Banana Avocado Mask
Mixing up a moisturizing mask with items from around the house will help strengthen hair and add body and shine, says Kori Ellis on beauty website SheKnows.com. Ellis recommends mashing a banana, egg and half of an avocado together in a large bowl. When the ingredients are thoroughly combined, add 2 tablespoons of honey, 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil and 3 tablespoons of buttermilk and mix well. Applying the mixture to the roots and smoothing it to the ends will ensure an even application. Cover your head with a shower cap and wait 30 minutes. Rinse the mixture out and shampoo as usual.
Herbal Conditioner
Create a homemade herbal conditioner to add moisture to dry hair, says Kathi Keville, author of "Herbs for Health and Healing." Keville recommends mixing 1 teaspoon of calendula flowers, 1 teaspoon of chamomile flowers, 1 teaspoon of burdock root, 1teaspoon of lavender flowers and 1 teaspoon of rosemary leaves in a large pot. Pour 1 pint of boiling water over the herbs and let the mixture sit for 30 minutes. Strain out the herbs and discard them. Add 1 teaspoon of vinegar to the mixture. Shampoo your hair, then pour the mixture over it. Wait several minutes and rinse your hair.
Oil Treatment
Keville also recommends using a homemade oil treatment on hair that is particularly dry and brittle. To create the oil treatment, mix 2 ounces of aloe vera gel, 2 ounces of castor oil, 2 drops of ginger essential oil, 6 drops of rose oil, 6 drops of geranium oil, 6 drops of cedar oil and 6 drops of rosemary oil. Heat the solution on the stove until the oil is slightly warm. Test the oil before pouring it on your hair to make sure it's not too hot. Work the oil through your scalp with your fingertips, then place a shower cap over your head. Rinse the oil out after two hours, then shampoo as usual.
