Acid reflux is a common condition where the acid in the stomach rises up into the esophagus. This occurs due to the fact that the valve separating the stomach from the esophagus is not functioning properly. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a combination of acid reflux and heartburn that occurs more than twice a week. Symptoms of GERD also include chest pain, difficulty swallowing, dry cough, sore throat, and a sensation of a lump in the throat. Treatment for discomfort associated with heartburn includes lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medications. In some cases, stronger medications or surgery may be necessary to help reduce symptoms.
Lifestyle Changes
Step 1
Take over-the-counter aluminum, magnesium or calcium-based antacids as directed on the product label. Antacids such as Maalox, Mylanta, Gelusil, Rolaids and Tums may provide some relief for acute symptoms. The best time to take antacids is approximately one hour before meals or just before the reflux symptoms start to begin following a meal.
Step 2
Eliminate fatty or fried foods, alcohol, chocolate, peppermint or mint, garlic, onion, tomato products and citrus foods and caffeine. Decrease portion sizes at mealtime and use snacks between meals as needed.
Step 3
Eliminate tobacco of all kinds, as nicotine weakens the lower esophageal muscles and contributes to symptoms of acid reflux.
Step 4
Wear loose-fitting clothing that does not fit tightly around your waist. Also avoid bending over after eating.
Step 5
Elevate the head of your bed 6 to 9 inches by placing wood or cement blocks under the head end or use a mattress wedge. Also wait at least two to three hours after eating to lie down. Reflux symptoms are also lessened when laying on your left side.
Tips and Warnings
- Discuss your signs and symptoms with your family doctor to see if additional remedies are necessary. If heartburn persists despite initial approaches, prescription-strength medications, surgery or other procedures may be necessary to help control symptoms.
- Administer over-the-counter medication as directed on the product label to avoid possible side effects.
