According to The International Center for Reiki Training, Reiki is a holistic Japanese technique that's used to correct energetic imbalances and remove stress. During this energy work, the client traditionally lays on a massage table as the therapist moves their hands around the body. The work can involve light touch, or the therapist may let their hands hover slightly above the body with no contact. Reiki can easily be worked into most standard massages.
Hara Evaluation
In reiki, the abdomen, known as the hara in Japanese, is considered to be a storage point for the body's energy. According to The International House of Reiki, energy expands from the hara into every other area of the body. During your massage, the therapist may place their hands on your abdomen to measure your energetic flow. Different areas of the hara correspond to different areas of the body, so the therapist may move their hands around to attain specific readings.
Breathing Exercises
Breathing is used to balance the body and generate greater amounts of spiritual energy during reiki sessions. During a session, the therapist might have you focus on your breathing and take deep, relaxing breaths. This is a relaxing way to end a full body massage.
Basic Palm Work
The therapist will use their hands to channel the energy in your body. The International House of Reiki notes that there are five basic hand positions, all of which can be easily worked into a massage session. The hand positions all center around the head and the neck area. The therapist will place their hands either on or above the reiki points, and hold them there for an extended period of time as they work on the energetic flow.
Energy Transfer
Massage Therapy 101 notes that a reiki practitioner seeks to do more than calm the client's energy. During a massage session, the therapist will attempt to channel life energy into the client's body. To do this, the therapist will often use his hands to detect the position on the body that is imbalanced. The imbalance does not have to be in one of the five basic hand positions. The therapist will place their hand on or above the imbalance, and focus on channeling positive external energies into the recipient.
