The Achilles tendon is the large tendon in the back of the leg that attaches the calf muscles to the heel bone. While usually sturdy, the Achilles can tear or rupture, especially during sports requiring spiriting or jumping. Licensed athletic trainer David Edell explains proper use of tape assists healing of the Achilles tendon by preventing over-stretching of the tendon. Proper taping limits foot dorsiflexion, or bringing the toes up, while allowing plantarflexion, or pointing of the toes, which places less stress on the Achilles. If you suspect an Achilles tendon rupture, always see your doctor before attempting treatment.

Step 1

Shave the affected lower leg. Wash the freshly shaved leg, ankle, and foot, and dry thoroughly. Trainer David Edell suggests spraying the area to be taped with a skin toughener, such as Tuf-Skin.

Step 2

Figure 8 the pre-wrap above the ankle by starting with an anchoring strip of pre-wrap around the mid-foot. Continue winding the pre-wrap up the leg, overlapping the layers until the pre-wrap reaches to just below the bulge of the calf muscle.

Step 3

Apply two anchor strips of elastic tape to the foot just over the metatarsal heads, or about an inch above the toes, and circle around the entire foot, according to the Nicholas Institue of Sports Medicine and Athletic Trauma. Repeat with two anchor strips around the calf, just above the pre-wrap. The anchor strips should be applied directly to the skin.

Step 4

Place a gel heel pad over the heel to protect the heel and Achilles tendon insertion from blisters and rubbing.

Step 5

Apply the vertical strap by attaching one end of the elastic tape to the center of the support strip on the bottom of the foot, suggests trainer David Edell. Pull the tape up the heel, and with the toes pointing just a little, attach the other end of the tape to the calf support strips. Cut the tape.

Step 6

Apply two more vertical support straps. Apply one strap to the lateral side of the Achilles, between the heel and the outside bulge of the ankle, and the other to the medial side of the Achilles, between the heel and inside bulge of the ankle. Attach both straps to the calf support strips.

Step 7

Wrap an ACE bandage around the entire taped area, starting at the anchor strips on the foot, for extra support. Use figure 8 circles around the ankle, then wrap in continuous circles until the bandage reaches the top anchor strips on the calves. Use the metal clips to hold the bandage in place, and tape over them for even more stability.

Things You'll Need

  • Razor
  • Skin toughening agent, such as Tuf-Skin
  • Roll of pre-wrap
  • Lubricated heel pad
  • Roll of 3-in. elastic tape
  • Ace bandage
