Treating acne can seem impossible, but there are easy steps that you can take to combat acne and get rid of it once and for all. With a proper skin care routine and the right products, you can diminish acne. You may also find that your skin will become more radiant and healthy, as well.

Proper Cleansing Techniques

It is recommended by Acne.org that you cleanse your skin once in the morning and once in the evening. When cleansing your skin, use gentle circular motions instead of scrubbing or washing in an up-and-down pattern. Acne.org also recommends you wash your face for at least 10 seconds. According to Acne.org, you should always pat your face dry instead of using a towel to rub it dry. Rubbing your skin with a towel can cause irritation.

Types of Cleansers

For acne-prone skin, there are four different types of active ingredients to choose from when selecting over-the-counter products. Benzoyl peroxide is probably the most effective, according to the Mayo Clinic. Benzoyl peroxide may cause dry, flaky skin. Salicylic acid is not as drying as benzoyl peroxide. Alpha hydroxy acids are derived from fruits, which contain sugar and promote new skin growth, which helps the appearance of acne scars. Sulfur is another option that usually is a combination of benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. Sulfur can have an unpleasant odor and may also contribute to dry skin. You may find that you have to try each type of active ingredient before finding the one that works best for your skin type.

Astringents and Toners

Depending upon your skin type, you may use either an astringent or toner, two different products. Astringents primarily contain alcohol or witch hazel. Since astringents are based on one of those two ingredients, they can cause dry skin; however, astringents do work well for oily skin and combination skin, according to iloveindia.com. Astringents also help to reduce and control oil and tighten pores. Toners are more suitable for those who have sensitive skin.

Moisturizers

Moisturizing can help to keep your skin hydrated, according to Northwestern Health Sciences University. For normal or oily skin, Northwestern Health Sciences University recommends that you choose lotion products. For dry, flaky skin, cream moisturizers will work best.

Other Products

Ladies who often wear cosmetics should look for products that are labeled oil-free or non-comedogenic, according to the Mayo Clinic. These products are less likely to clog pores and cause acne. Men who wear after-shave or use shaving lotions should also be on the look-out for products that say non-irritating or non-overdrying. This will help to eliminate skin irritation and inflammation, which only contribute to acne.
