How to Make Homemade Archery Targets

Archery is one of the oldest forms of hunting and requires extensive practice to build the skills needed for a productive hunting trip. Purchasing pre-made targets for archery can be expensive, and a more viable alternative is to make your own. You'll find making your own archery targets to be an effective cost cutter, and is also an enjoyable project to undertake with teens or younger children.

Step 1

Place a white poster board on a large, flat surface.

Step 2

Center a dinner plate in the top half of the board, and trace a line around the circumference. Repeat the process in the bottom center half.

Step 3

Draw similar circles with the saucer, cup and 50 cent piece, centering each object within the dinner plate circles. You will now have two targets on the poster board, with each target having four circles of decreasing size.

Step 4

Trace over the circles, using a wide-tipped black marker. Color the center circles in, using a wide-tipped red marker.

Step 5

Stack two bales of straw. The results will be a backing for your targets that is approximately 4 by 4 feet.

Step 6

Affix your target to the straw by placing a washer on a nail and shoving a nail through each corner of the poster board, into the straw.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you are target practicing with younger children, have them color the alternating circles so they are easier to see.
