What Is NutriSystem?

NutriSystem is a weight loss program that is based on prepackaged meals. NutriSystem recommends that participants exercise and follow the program in its entirety. The program is designed to help participants lose one to two pounds of weight per week, which is the U.S. National Library of Health recommended weight loss rate. As is the case with any weight loss program, NutriSystem should be started only after receiving approval from your physician.

Programs

All of the NutriSystem programs are subdivided into plans for men or women. The program options include Basic, Silver, Diabetic, Vegetarian or Selects. All of these programs are differentiated by the food offerings and portion sizes and number of servings.

Foods

According to the NutriSystem website, the program offers over 120 foods to choose from. However, it also states that this changes due to inventory and manufacturing. The foods include options for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. On all programs except the Selects, the food is either ready to eat, dehydrated or powdered. On the Selects program, the food is fresh-frozen. In addition to the foods provided, you are expected to purchase certain items, including dairy, fruits, vegetables and grains.

NutriSystem Balance

Once you achieve your weight loss goals, you can opt to continue using NutriSystem using the NutriSystem Balance program. On this program, you can use NutriSystem foods, foods from the grocery store, or a combination of both at your discretion. The kit for the NutriSystem Balance program includes a meal planner, shopping guides, a fitness tracker and a discount program for NutriSystem products and other products to help you to keep your weight under control.

Counseling

The NutriSystem program includes unlimited counseling, according to the NutriSystem website. This counseling is available via email, online chat or by phone. The counseling is meant only as an avenue to answer dietary questions. The counselors won't advise on or answer any questions that have any health related undertones.

Warnings

According to customer complaints filed on ConsumerAffairs.com, as well as a report by a ConsumerAffairs.com reporter, NutriSystem food isn't for everyone. Many people (see the Resource titled "Consumer Complaints") state that the food isn't palatable. Additionally, complaints about NutriSystem substituting meals run rampant on the website. Another consideration is the problem many customers have when trying to return the products. The company boasts a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee; however, according to the reports on ConsumerAffairs.com, the process of returning unused portions is lengthy, complex and many times results in only a partial refund.
