How High Should You Place Golf Flag Pins?

Height of Flag

The height of the flag should be at 7 feet on any hole of an official golf course. The flag should be attached to the pin--or flag stick--and it goes directly in the center of the hole. The flag usually includes the logo of the golf course and it should be quite distinctive and bright because a golfer who is trying to get his ball onto the green from a distance of 250 yards or longer needs to be able to see clearly exactly where he is supposed to aim. At 7 feet tall, the flag can be seen from that distance--or even farther--and the brightness and distinctiveness of the flag itself makes it easier to spot for the golfer.

Making the Hole

If you are about to put your flag in the ground to signify where the hole is, you have to make a hole. The hole is 4.25 inches in diameter and 6 inches deep with tapered sides that keep the ball from bouncing out of the hole. Most golf courses change the location of the hole on an every-other-day basis during the week and an every-day basis on weekends when the course is busiest. This is done with a tool called the hole cutter. This is done to avoid wear and tear on the green. If the hole is not moved frequently, wear patterns will develop on the green, which will have a negative impact on a golfer's ability to putt.

Size and Price of Flag

Official flags on golf pins measure 14 inches high by 20 inches wide. The design on the flags can be changed frequently for tournament sponsors, advertisers and corporate events. A set of 18 new flags usually costs between $325 and $400.
