It can be difficult to take out contact lenses, especially if you have trouble putting them in. If contact lenses are taken out incorrectly, you run the risk of having them fold under your eyelid, tear or become contaminated. Following the proper procedure for taking out your contact lenses is important for good eye health.
Step 1
Wash your hands well. It is important that your hands are clean when you take out contact lenses. Particles and oil on your skin can get in your eyes and irritate them. Be sure to lather your hands all over and rinse thoroughly with clean water.
Step 2
Blink your eyes several times. This will correctly position your contact lenses directly on your eyeball. It will also add moisture to your eyes. If you have dry eyes, add a few rewetting drops or some multipurpose solution to get your eyes wet.
Step 3
Place your middle finger on your face about 1 inch beneath the eye that contains the contact lens you wish to remove. Pull the skin of your face downward so that your lower eyelid drops lower.
Step 4
Open your eye as wide as you can. Stare straight forward. It helps to look into a mirror as you do this. Look at your own eyeball in the mirror and don't look away.
Step 5
Use the index finger and thumb on the same hand to grab the contact lens. Do this slowly so you don't jab your eyeball. Place your index finger on one edge of the contact lens and your thumb on the other. Gently pinch your fingers together to seize the contact lens.
Step 6
Pull your hand away slowly. The contact lens should be pinched between your index finger and thumb. Be careful not to crush or tear it. Immediately wash the contact lens with multipurpose solution and store it in a contact lens container.
