Although hair loss is believed to be primarily a problem with men, women also can suffer the effects of thinning hair. Thinning hair is especially common after menopause, according to physicians at Ohio State University Medical Center. Although thin hair may be inevitable if you are genetically predisposed, keeping your hair strong and healthy will help your hair look its best.

Keep it Clean

Wash your hair two or three times each week but don't wash your hair when it doesn't need it. Use a gentle, PH-balanced shampoo without additives, which can dry the hair. Massage the shampoo into your hair gently with your fingertips. Rinse your hair with lukewarm water, then blot dry with a soft, absorbent towel.

Prevent Damage

Avoid pony tails and tight braids if you have long hair. If you need to pull your hair back, use a coated rubber band to avoid breakage. Minimize use of hot rollers, combs, curling irons and blow dryers. Comb your hair with a wide-tooth comb to prevent hair breakage.

Conditioner

Strengthen your hair with a healthy, homemade conditioner. Place 1/3 cup yogurt in a blender and add 1 ripe avocado, 1 egg and 2 tsp. honey. Blend well. Massage the conditioner into the hair once every week and allow the conditioner to remain on the hair for five to 10 minutes before rinsing your hair with lukewarm water. A ripe banana can be substituted for the avocado and 1/3 cup mayonnaise can be used in place of the egg.

Grape Seed Extract

Two glasses of 100 percent grape juice will provide a healthy dose of grape seed extract. According to researchers at the University of Utah, grape seed extract is a powerful antioxidant that works with collagen to promote strong, healthy hair. If you prefer not to drink grape juice, the skin of red grapes also contains high levels of the same antioxidants contained in grape seed extract.

Sage and Rosemary Shampoo

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, a topical application of sage, peppermint and rosemary essential oil may stimulate hair growth, though more research is needed in this area. Mix three drops of each oil into a tablespoon of olive oil. Massage the mixture into the scalp once or twice every day.
