Sperm is the male reproductive cell that fertilizes the female ovum or egg. The term "sperm count" refers to the amount of sperm that a man has. This depends on the quantity, quality and motility of the sperm. It takes only one sperm to fertilize an egg, but if it does not have the proper characteristics, it may be ineffective. There are several ways to increase sperm count, including lifestyle and dietary adjustments.
Step 1
Stay away from toxins. Avoid contact with any type of pollutants, through the skin or through breathing. This includes pesticides, solvents and chemicals that might be used at home or at your job. Wear protective clothing and wash off any pollutants immediately if they contact your skin.
Step 2
Stop bad habits. Smoking, drinking and the use of illegal drugs can cause sperm to be misshapen and can reduce the quantity and quality of sperm. Avoid these habits, especially in combination.
Step 3
Keep cool. Being in warm areas for long periods of time can be detrimental to sperm count. Avoid long exposure to hot tubs, steam rooms and saunas. Also avoid tight-fitting underwear, using a laptop and sitting for long periods of time.
Step 4
Avoid steroids. Although you may gain size and strength, steroids can lower your sperm count. Avoid them along with testosterone-boosting supplements.
Step 5
Keep your diet clean. Eating a diet that is high in saturated fats and processed foods can cause weight gain, which can reduce your sperm count. Instead, eat foods that are high in antioxidants, such as fruits and vegetables that can help increase sperm count.
