Keeping your nails healthy and hydrated is important. A lack of the proper vitamins or nutrients may result in your nails become dry or brittle. Fortunately, there are a number of vitamins which can help in ensuring your nails grow strong and healthy.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that is necessary for healthy development and growth. Vitamin C will dissolve in water as it is water-soluble and any leftover amounts will leave your body through urine, according to MedlinePlus. This means that you must continuously consume vitamin C daily. Vitamin C is responsible for the production of collagen, which is a protein that assists in making scar tissue, skin, blood vessels and ligaments. A deficiency in vitamin C may cause your nails to become very dry and brittle, which will stop them from growing.

Zinc

Zinc is an essential trace element that can be found in the foods that we consume. It can be found in every cell of the body. Zinc has been used since ancient times due to its healing properties. It plays an important role in reproduction, vision, smell and functioning of the immune system, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Zinc also contains antioxidant properties that can protect cells against damage that may be caused by free radicals. A deficiency in zinc results in white spots appearing on your fingernails.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is a fat-soluble vitamin that contains antioxidant properties. It exists in eight different forms and has been used in the prevention and treatment in a number of health conditions due to its antioxidant properties, according to the Mayo Clinic. Vitamin E assists in promoting enhanced blood circulation to the nails, allowing them to grow faster.

Biotin (Vitamin H)

Biotin, also known as vitamin H, is part of the B complex group of vitamins. All B vitamins assist the body in converting food into glucose, which allows the body to have energy to burn. B vitamins help to metabolize carbohydrates, amino acids and fats. Biotin is often recommended as it can help in strengthening the hair and nails, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Biotin may also help in improving brittle, thin and splitting fingernails.
