An earache can be bothersome, particularly when you are trying to sleep or rest. The pain, which may be dull or sharp, can be nagging and difficult to ignore. An inner ear infection is a common cause of earaches. Ear infections are especially common in young children, with at least 75 percent of kids having at least one before their third birthday, according to MayoClinic.com. Other causes of an earache include trauma to the ear, sinus infections, tooth infections and ear pressure caused by high altitude. When an earache strikes, there are things you can try at home to get relief.

Pain Relievers

Common, over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen can offer relief from an earache. They can also reduce a fever that may accompany an earache caused by an ear infection, according to the National Institutes of Health. Always carefully follow label directions when using over-the-counter pain relievers. Also, aspirin should never be given to children because of the risk of a potentially life-threatening condition called Reye's syndrome.

Cold

Cold compresses or ice packs can help relieve an earache, according to the National Institutes of Health. Simply wrap an ice pack or cold compress in a towel or cloth and placing it on the affected ear. A bag of frozen vegetables can also work in a pinch.

Heat

Applying heat to an aching ear can provide some quick relief. A heating pad can help, but warm, moist heat such as from a damp washcloth is best, according to MayoClinic.com.

Oil

Olive oil can help soothe an aching ear. Place a drop of two of room-temperature olive oil in the ear to get some relief, according to the National Institutes of Health. Olive oil works similarly to over-the-counter ear drops, which can also provide relief.

Gum

Chewing a piece of gum can help relieve pressure in the ear, which can lessen the pain of an earache, according to the National Institutes of Health. Never give gum to young children, though, because of the choking risk.
