Transworld Skateboarding is a leading magazine and online resource for the skateboarding community. It features expert riders' commentaries on popular tricks. The Transworld film production arm makes many of the most popular skateboarding videos in the industry. Skateboarders often turn to Transworld Skateboarding for tutorials and tips on skateboard tricks. These tips often come directly from legends in the skateboarding world.

Backside Nosegrind

The backside nosegrind is a trick where you ollie (jump) the board up onto a raised surface, such as a ledge or wall, and proceed to ride on just the front wheels (the nose) for the duration of your stay up on the ledge. Then, you jump off back to the ground. These raised ledges are a common feature of skateboarding parks. Transworld Skateboarding offers video tips on this trick by a master of the backside nosegrind, Brian Wenning. Many skateboarders learn to ride up to the ledge from an angle along its side. According to Wenning, it is easier to start the trick by approaching the ledge from directly behind. Also be sure the nose of the board never touches the ledge itself. This disqualifies the trick as a proper nosegrind.

Kickflip Frontside 50-50

The kickflip frontside 50-50 is an impressive skateboarding trick in which the board simultaneously makes a 360-degree barrel roll while you jump up on a ledge. Transworld Skateboarding provides tips from Chris Troy, a skateboarding expert with Black Label, a leading manufacturer of skateboards. According to Troy, you should first learn two other tricks before attempting the kickflip frontside 50-50. The basic kickflip consists of an ollie with a barrel roll. You start and end on flat ground, without a ledge. The frontside 50-50, on its own, is simply an ollie up onto the ledge. Unlike the nosegrind, you land on both wheels and then turn off the ledge in the same direction as your first approach. If you can master both of these tricks, then the key to the kickflip frontside 50-50 is timing. When you jump for the ledge, kickflip in the process. However, you must land on a specific spot in order to stay on the ledge. Troy recommends that you wait until you see your board directly between you and the ledge while in midair, then push down. This rhythm will usually lead to a good landing on the ledge.

The Kickflip

The kickflip is one of the most basic tricks in skateboarding. It is the rite of passage that allows you to attempt more complicated tricks because many other tricks incorporate the kickflip. Transworld Skateboarding provides expert kickflip tips from Rodrigo Peterson. For him, a slight alteration to the basic skateboard stance makes the trick easier. Angle your front foot so it points slightly to the nose of the board. This minimizes the foot's turn that is necessary for kicking the board in midair. During the jump, press down on the left edge of the board with the front foot to start the flip. The foot is already positioned to make this easier and this slight change in the stance might make all the difference in mastering this trick.
