Oily skin and hair are caused by the same thing: overproduction of oil from the sebaceous glands. This oil is important to both skin and hair, but in some people, the glands overproduce oils, creating a greasy appearance instead of a healthy glow and shine. Most remedies can't stop the production of oil, but there are some that can help absorb and dry the excess oils.
Proper Cleansing
Harsh cleansing routines and products can cause the body to produce more oil as a natural response to irritation. Avoid anything that could potentially irritate the skin such as scrubbers, harsh products, washcloths and rubbing the skin dry after cleansing the skin. Use a mild cleanser no more than twice per day, and avoid soaps. Most soaps strip the skin of all natural oils.
Clay Mud or Masks
Apply clay mud or masks to absorb excess oils away from the skin. Clay mud can often be applied to hair, as well. Check the labels or ask your local beautician for a clay product recommendation for both hair and skin.
Fruits for Skin
Fruit acids treat oily skin quite effectively. Try pureeing fresh tomatoes and applying the puree to the skin for 20 minutes. Papaya is another fruit known to replenish the skin. Many home remedies include lemon juice in their mixture, or it can even be applied with equal parts water and then rinsed with warm water followed by cool water to tighten the pores. Lemon contains natural bleaching properties, however, that can make skin photosensitive, requiring sunscreen when you go out.
Hair Remedies
There are many different shampoo and conditioner concoctions you can make at home to help wash away excess oils from the hair. For a shampoo, bring to a boil one cup of water with two tablespoons each of dried peppermint and spearmint and one tablespoon of sage. After steeping the herbs for 20 to 25 minutes, strain the herbs and add 2/3 cup baby shampoo. For a conditioner, bring to a boil 1/3 cup water with ¼ cup sage. Let the water cool, strain and remove the sage and then add in 2 tablespoons liquid lecithin, ¼ cup glycerin, ¼ cup honey and 2 tablespoons dried buttermilk powder. Shampoo and condition the hair as normal to remove excess oil.
