Taking a daily multivitamin adds extra nutritional insurance in case your daily dietary intake of vitamins and minerals is deficient in some areas. Men's nutritional needs aren't all that different from women's, with one notable exception. Where many women find it beneficial to take an iron supplement each day, men do not generally need additional iron in their diet. Therefore, an iron-free multivitamin is optimal for men.
GNC Mega Men
GNC Mega Men multivitamins supply 100 percent of the recommended daily amount of vitamins A, D, E and K, 500 percent of vitamin C and megadoses of all the B-complex vitamins. They also provide 100 percent or more of the minerals copper, chromium and zinc, plus almost 300 percent of selenium. They contain saw palmetto and lycopene, which are purported to support prostate health. This multivitamin also contains a proprietary vegetable-based antioxidant blend and an amino acid blend. The main disadvantages are the large size of the pills and the expense. GNC also offers Mega Men Sport, Mega Men Performance and Vitality, Mega Men 50 Plus and Mega Men Heart multivitamin formulas.
Centrum Ultra Men's
Centrum Ultra Men's multivitamins provide 100 percent or more of the daily recommended amount of C, D, E, B6 and B12 plus 70 to 80 percent of vitamins A, K, riboflavin and niacin. It has 8 mg of iron, which is the recommended daily amount for men under 50, plus over 100 percent of selenium, 45 percent of copper and 73 percent of zinc. It also contains lycopene for prostate support.
One-A-Day Men's Health
One-A-Day Men's Health has no iron, but it does have 100 percent or more of vitamins C, D, riboflavin and B6, plus a megadose of 300 percent B12. It also has 70 to 80 percent of the daily recommended niacin, thiamine and vitamins A and E. One-A-Day Men's Health also contains 100 percent of copper, chromium and zinc, plus extra selenium and lycopene for prostate health. However, it does fall short on vitamin K, with only 25 percent of the recommended daily allowance.
Rainbow Light Men's One
Rainbow Light Men's One is another iron-free men's multivitamin. In addition to 100 percent or more of the daily recommended dose of vitamins A, C, D, E, K and niacin, this supplement contains megadoses of thiamin, riboflavin, B6 and B12. In terms of minerals, Rainbow Light Men's One provides 100 percent or more of zinc, selenium, chromium and copper. Rainbow Light vitamins are hypoallergenic, free of sugar or other sweeteners, lactose, wheat, yeast, artificial flavors and colors and preservatives. Rainbow Light also claims to be gentler on the stomach than its competitors.
Opti-Men by Optimum Nutrition
Opti-Men provides over 200 percent of the recommended daily value of vitamins A, C and E plus mega-doses of the B-complex vitamins. It also provides 90 percent of K and 75 percent of D. For minerals, it contains at least 100 percent of the needed chromium, copper, selenium and zinc; it contains no iron, however. Opti-Men also provides a proprietary blend of amino acids, enzymes and antioxidants, as well as what Optimum Nutrition describes as a "Viri-Blend" of herbs plus oyster concentrate "designed to enhance your male edge."
