Calluses form on the feet to protect you from putting too much pressure on the area. As the callus worsens, it thickens and forms a hard center, turning into a corn, according to "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies." If you use a medicated pad or cream to treat corns, it is likely to contain salicylic acid. Instead of taking the risk that the acid destroys normal skin along with the corn, you can consider trying home methods instead. Note that there is no scientific evidence to support the effectiveness of most home remedies.

Foot Soaks

Since corns have a hardened texture, you want to soften the skin to find relief. Place your feet in a warm tub of water and allow them to soak for at least 10 minutes before removing them. Soaking the skin also helps make the callus easier to remove. You may add a small amount of chamomile tea to the soak. The chamomile soothes the feet while softening the roughened skin. The chamomile may stain your feet temporarily, but the discoloration will go away once you wash your feet with soap and water.

Pumice Stone

The Mayo Clinic advises against shaving or cutting off any corns you may have on your feet. Instead after soaking your feet, you may use a pumice stone to rub off the callused skin. If you have diabetes, your doctor is likely to advise against using a pumice stone on your feet because of to the increased risk of infection. Apply an oil-based lubricant to your feet after using the pumice stone to keep them moistened.

Aspirin Wrap

"The Doctors Book of Home Remedies" recommends an aspirin wrap to soften skin affected by corns and calluses. Crush up five aspirins and mix the powder with ½ tsp. of lemon juice and ½ tsp. of water. Apply the paste directly onto the corns and wrap plastic sheeting around your feet. Place a hot towel over the plastic wrap and leave it in place for 10 minutes. Repeat daily as needed.
