Acne blemishes can result when dead skin cells, oils and bacteria infiltrate your pores. When the irritants inflame the pores, damage to the collagen and elastin fibers can lead to scarring. These scars can be raised or depressed. You also can use home remedies to both alleviate active acne and reduce scarring.

Lemons

Lemons contain citric acid that can lighten acne scars--particularly new ones. Begin by cleansing your skin, and then squeeze lemon juice onto a cotton ball, according to the American Chronicle, an online magazine. Gently swab the cotton ball over the acne scar. Rinse after 10 minutes. Several months of applications may be necessary.

Tea Tree Oil

This natural oil is as effective as benzoyl peroxide, an over-the-counter acne treatment, in reducing moderate acne blemishes, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Applying a 5 percent gel--which can be found at most drugstores and health food stores--can reduce bacteria and inflammation. Apply on and around the affected area to prevent further breakouts, "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies" advises. This blemish treatment is considered gentler than other acne medications and causes less irritation.

Baking Soda

Baking soda can be used much like a microdermabrasion treatment to exfoliate the skin, eliminating dead skin cells that contribute to acne and smoothing the skin, according to the American Chronicle. Mix 1 tsp. baking soda with 2 tsps. filtered water to make a paste. Massage the mixture on the acne scarring, and leave the paste on for a minute. Rinse. Repeat one to two times per week for several months for best results.

Pineapple

Pineapples contain vitamin C--also known as ascorbic acid. When pureed and applied to the face, pineapple exfoliates and fades acne marks, according to the American Chronicle. Puree 1/4 cup pineapple in a blender. Gently massage on the skin. Leave the pineapple on for 10 to 15 minutes, and then rinse.
