Serums, due to their sheer appearance and lightweight texture, are more suitable for acne-prone or oily skin than creams, according to skincare expert Paula Begoun. Some of the best include antioxidants and other beneficial ingredients that can help leave your skin hydrated and looking its best.

Olay Total Effects Instant Smoothing Serum

Olay's serum is one of the best products in the Total Effects product line, reports Begoun. She liked its "elegant blend" of skin-improving ingredients, such as niacinamide and wrinkle-fighting antioxidants. It's all mixed into a silicone blend that hydrates your skin cells and fills in surface imperfections, like pores and fine lines, for an instantly renewed complexion.

ROC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Serum

ROC's serum is the best serum available from drugstores, according to the editors of "Women's Health" magazine who named it a "best beauty pick." Dr. Valerie Callender, reviewing the skin serum for "Women's Health," loved its use of retinol. An all-natural derivative of vitamin A, retinol can help treat wrinkles by exfoliating and resurfacing the top layer of your skin. The serum also contains alpha hydroxy acid for further exfoliating, along with moisturizing plant oils, vitamin C and nourishing wheat gluten.

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex

Estee Lauder's recovery complex is a light, water-based serum that was named one of the best serums on the market by Begoun. In her review, Begoun says it contains "cell-communicating" ingredients that can improve skin health, potentially wrinkle-fighting peptides, and other antioxidants. She concludes with a favorable reference to the serum's lack of fragrance, saying this helps make it "suitable for all skin types."

Neutrogena Retinol NX Concentrated Retinol Serum

Begoun says the results of her tests of Neutrogena's serum was "very good." She liked its use of retinol, which fights wrinkles, in packaging that ensures the active ingredient's stability and shelf-life. Begoun specifically notes that the serum can help repair "sun-damaged, wrinkled skin." Besides the retinol, Neutrogena also includes other skin soothers, conditioners and moisturizers like silicone.
