Hair that is breaking off, either at the ends or at the crown, is damaged, says medical website, KidsHealth.org. Hair damage may be caused by hair coloring, perming, blow drying, styling, straightening, or by using hair products that contain alcohol. To stop hair breakage, eliminate bad hair habits from your styling routine and treat your hair with care.
Blow Dry and Straighten Correctly
Letting your hair dry naturally as often as possible will help eliminate damage from heat styling. If you must blow dry or straighten your hair, don't use tools that are more than five years old, says Beverly Hills celebrity stylist Cristophe in an article in "Good Housekeeping." Instead, use a hair straightener that has ceramic plates so the hair is heated evenly, but does not get too hot. Let your hair air dry until it's only damp before heat drying. When using a hairdryer, use the nozzle attachment to keep heat from damaging your hair's cuticles.
Don't Brush Wet Hair
When your hair is wet, it is the most delicate and susceptible to breakage, says KidsHealth.org. Treat your hair with care immediately after getting out of the shower by patting it dry carefully with a towel instead of wringing the water out. Brushing your hair when it is wet may cause breakage, says an article in "Good Housekeeping." Wait until your hair is completely dry to brush it, and use a natural bristled hairbrush, like a wooden or boar bristled brush instead of a plastic brush.
Wash Less
Washing your hair every day may make your hair feel clean and healthy, but it may actually be doing more harm than good. Washing your hair every day, particularly if it is dry, may cause additional breakage, says KidsHealth.org. If you must wash your hair every day, use a mild shampoo and conditioner to keep your hair from drying out and becoming brittle. If your hair is oily only at the roots, shampoo your hair several times a week and use a dry shampoo to make the roots less greasy in between washings.
