While many makeup brands utilize petroleum-based products to create their makeup, mineral makeups utilize a variety of mineral-based ingredients, such as iron oxides, mica powder and titanium dioxide, according to Hollywood Makeup Secrets. A lack of preservatives and synthetic materials offers benefits to those using mineral makeup as their cosmetic of choice.

Reduced Irritation

Makeup can contain a number of synthetic chemicals and filler ingredients, according to Hollywood Makeup Secrets. Because mineral makeup does not contain these ingredients, it can prove less irritating to the skin, according to Dr. Arnold R. Oppenheim, a Virginia Beach, Virginia, dermatologist. For this reason, it often is recommended to those who experience inflammatory skin conditions, such as acne or rosacea.

Reduced Bacteria

Because many non-mineral makeups are a liquid consistency, they are more vulnerable to exposure from bacteria and bacterial buildup in the product. For this reason, many makeup products are stamped with an expiration date as a preventive measure to ensure the user is not exposed to bacteria by using past the safe date. Because mineral makeup is dry, it does not have the same problems in terms of moisture and bacteria. Not only can you use it for longer, buts its environment does not support bacterial growth, according to LoveToKnow.

Clearer Pores

Makeup products can contain oil, which helps a liquid makeup product spread more evenly but can clog the pores. Even conventional makeup products labeled as noncomedogenic can still clog the pores, resulting in bacteria buildup in the pores and leading to acne blemishes. Mineral makeup should, in most cases, not clog the pores because it contains natural products that can, in some instances, be nourishing for the skin, according to LoveToKnow. Also, because of its powdery consistency, it sits on the skin rather than soaks into the skin--meaning the pores do not get clogged, according to Oppenheim.

Fewer Allergic Reactions

Sometimes the harsh chemicals, fragrances and other additives to conventional makeup can cause a person to experience an allergic reaction. Because mineral makeup does not contain these types of additives, it is less likely to result in an allergic reaction, according to Hollywood Makeup Secrets. However, if you see mineral makeup that contains bismuth oxychloride, you may want to shy away from this product as it has been linked with causing adverse skin reactions, according to Oppenheim.
