Detrol is the brand name for tolterodine, a medication for people with bladder control problems caused by overactive bladder, also known as irritable bladder. Detrol works by decreasing bladder contraction, thus reducing symptoms of sudden and frequent urinary urges and leakage. Although Detrol is effective, it can cause side effects, including dry mouth and eyes, headache, upset stomach and constipation. A few different herbs offer possible alternatives. Talk with your health care provider before making any changes in your medication or beginning herbal therapy.
Pumpkin Seed
Animal research published in the Journal of Tongji Medical University
in 1994 found that pumpkin seed oil had beneficial effects on bladder control issues. Pumpkin seed oil decreased bladder and urethral pressure and increased bladder compliance, the amount of volume the bladder holds in relation to bladder pressure. Additionally, Commission E, Germany's regulatory agency for herbs, has approved pumpkin seed for treating urination difficulties associated with irritable bladder. Pumpkin seed oil appears to have a tonic effect on the bladder and the ability to relax the sphincter at the neck of the bladder, according to the 2003 book "Phytotherapy," by Francesco Capasso, et al. The Commission E recommends taking 10 g of ground seeds daily for urination problems.
Buchu
Buchu leaf, harvested from three species of the genus Barosma, also may be an alternative to Detrol. Herbalists indicate buchu for long-term cystic irritability, another name for bladder irritability, as well as for difficulty restraining urine and a constant urge to urinate, according to Henriette's Herbal. Buchu has anti-inflammatory properties and is a traditional herbal remedy for bladder and prostate inflammation, as well as for urinary tract infections. Talk with a qualified herbalist before taking buchu, because it can cause side effects and has certain contraindications. Additionally, if your urination difficulties are caused by an infection, you may need conventional medical treatment.
Horsetail
Equisetum hyemale, known as horsetail and scouring rush, is another possible alternative to Detrol. This herb is useful for treating bladder irritation, nighttime incontinence, and the urge to urinate when very little urine is in the bladder, according to Henriette's Herbal. Horsetail has diuretic properties and increases urine output. As with buchu, horsetail can cause side effects, so consult a qualified practitioner before taking this supplement.
