As you get older, you may notice more fat around your stomach area. Excess belly fat is not simply unattractive, it can have serious health ramifications, such as increasing your risk of diabetes and certain cancers. Make some important lifestyle changes to get rid of excess belly fat for a fitter, healthier body.
Step 1
Watch your caloric intake. Any fat on your body, including belly fat, is caused by taking in more calories than you can use. To get rid of belly fat, eat fewer calories than you use during the course of your day. Use a calorie counter website, such as Spark People (see Resources).
Step 2
Eat less sugar and avoid alcohol. Refined sugars turn into fat if you do not burn them off quickly. Alcohol not only contains a lot of empty calories, it can cause bloating and inflammation of your liver, contributing to a paunch in your belly.
Step 3
Get plenty of aerobic exercise. Walking, jogging, swimming and other aerobic exercises will help you to burn fat. Many people begin to lose fat from their midsections first, especially if this was the last place that you gained weight.
Step 4
Do some weight training exercise. Exercising the large muscles of your body can boost your weight-loss efforts. Consider seeing a personal trainer to maximize your fat-burning workouts with the proper ratio of aerobic-to-weight training exercise.
Step 5
Avoid doing too many sit-ups or crunches. These types of exercises will tone and strengthen abdominal muscles, but if you don't burn the fat off first, they will simply make your tummy look bigger. Do some crunches, but don't overdo them or neglect a fat-burning cardio workout at the same time.
