Pilates is a mind-body exercise system that emphasizes the muscles of the hips, back and abdominals. Although Pilates is sometimes performed on equipment known as the reformer or the Cadillac, many classes involve using just your own body weight to perform exercises while seated, lying down or kneeling on a mat. The proper type of mat enhances your ability to perform these exercises.

Features

A Pilates mat is a fitness mat that usually measures from 72 inches to 86 inches long and 21 inches to 39 inches wide. A Pilates mat should have a thickness of at least ½ inch to provide adequate cushioning. Manufacturers usually use foam or rubber to construct Pilates mats. Pilates mats should feature a nonslip surface to keep your hands, feet and back in place and an antiskid bottom to prevent it from sliding during your Pilates practice.

Studio Mats

In addition to mats that roll up for portability, some studios feature folding Pilates mats. These mats measure around 4 feet by 8 feet and accommodate more advanced practitioners. They are not appropriate for personal use because they are not easily transported or tucked away in a closet at home.

Benefits

Many Pilates moves require you to roll or to lie on your side or your abdomen. A soft, pliable mat makes these moves more comfortable. For some people who have prominent tailbones or sensitive spines, doing such moves as "rolling-like-a-ball" or the "roll-up" is impossible without a Pilates mat.

Considerations

If you plan on storing your mat at home or carrying it to class, look for a mat that comes with a carrying case or built-in fastening straps. Choose a mat made with a closed-cell construction, instead of pressed foam, because it will be firmer and offer more cushioning, notes the Pilates RAW website. Expect a Pilates mat to cost anywhere from $20 to $50, depending on quality and brand.

Warning

Using the appropriate kind of mat will enhance your Pilates practice. Many people use a yoga sticky mat for Pilates without realizing that it will not provide adequate cushioning for many Pilates moves. Regular fitness mats found in a gym also may not provide adequate support for certain Pilates exercises.
