Hand reflexology is a method of stimulating various points in the hand to create positive health effects in other parts of the body. The Ontario College of Reflexology reports that hand reflexology delivers four main benefits: relaxation and stress relief, improved circulation, normalization of the metabolism and complementary treatment to medical care. Do not attempt to use reflexology as the sole form of treatment for a serious medical condition; always consult a medical professional if you are ill.

Stress Relief

A 2008 study conducted by the Cardiff School of Health Sciences in Wales indicated that reflexology may be useful in treating stress in the workplace, but more research is necessary to provide conclusive evidence. Decreased stress can benefit numerous systems in the body. Elevated levels of stress are associated with heart disease, stroke, a depressed immune system, gastrointestinal problems, sleep problems, headaches and muscular pain.

Improved Circulation and Metabolism

According to the Ontario College of Reflexology, reflexology helps to break up deposits under the skin, improving the flow of energy in the body. Reflexology may be beneficial if you suffer from poor circulation, which may cause pain or tingling in the hands and feet and impair your body's ability to fight infection. Improved circulation may also help regulate the metabolism, which is related to processes such as digestion, elimination, body temperature and the function of the brain and nerves.

Complementary Treatment

Because of the relaxation benefits associated with hand reflexology, it may be an effective method for maximizing the benefits of various forms of medical treatment. According to Barbara and Kevin Kunz, authors of several books on the subject of reflexology, the use of reflexology as a form of patient care has increased in obstetric and gynecological services, post surgical care and patient support. The National Maternity Hospital in Dublin, Ireland, regularly offers reflexology services to patients suffering from conditions such as hypertension, endometriosis, depression, infertility and insomnia.

Pain Relief

Reflexology may also be beneficial for relieving pain associated with tension headaches or fibromyalgia. According to AltMD, massaging the sides and lower joint of the fingers can relax tight muscles in the neck and shoulders that contribute to headaches. Rubbing the top joint of each finger may help relieve sinus and allergy headaches. Reflexology may also help those suffering from pain caused by fibromyalgia by improving circulation, helping to eliminate toxins from the body and boosting the immune system, although research studies are inconclusive.
