Dark shadows around the eyes can make you look tired and worn out. Although the shadows typically do not signify a serious medical condition, you are likely to want to treat the condition for cosmetic reasons. As you age, the skin around your eyes thins and puts you at a higher risk for developing the dark circles.
Causes
Knowing the cause of the dark shadows is helpful for treating the condition. In many cases, if the underlying condition is cured, the circles clear up. According to the Mayo Clinic, dark circles under eyes can form because of allergies, heredity, aging, sun exposure, pigment disorders and nasal congestion.
Home Treatments
The Doctors Book of Home Remedies suggests using cold compresses to get rid of dark circles. Cold water constricts blood vessels and lightens the darkened pigment. Leave the washcloth for a minimum of 10 minutes and re-wet the compress often to keep it cold. Alternatively, cold cucumber slices can be placed on your eyes for 10 minute-intervals throughout the day.
Dermatological Options
According to "The New York Times," laser therapy is available to permanently destroy the pigment around the eyes that is causing the dark circles. Several sessions might be required in order. Less-invasive dermatological treatments for dark circles are fillers injected into the skin. The fillers plump the area to hide the discoloration.
Prevention
Prevent dark shadows around your eyes by getting enough sleep and not smoking. Do not drink excessive amount of alcohol, which dulls the skin. Since sun exposure exacerbates dark shadows around the eyes by increasing melanin production, wear a moisturizer with SPF protection.
Considerations
Use beauty products to cover the circles while waiting for them to clear up. Under-eye concealer is placed below the eyes to hide shadows. Pick a concealer that is one shade lighter than your natural skin color.
