Medicare Part D providers are private insurers authorized by Medicare to offer a Prescription Drug Plan, or PDP, to Medicare beneficiaries. You are eligible for Part D benefits if you have Medicare, but you must enroll in a PDP to receive coverage for your prescription drugs. A convenient way to find a list of Part D providers is to use the PDP finder on the Medicare website, which also allows you to compare PDPs and enroll in the PDP of your choice.
Medicare's PDP Finder
The official government Medicare website provides information about all Medicare benefits, including Part D benefits. On the web page for Part D, you can find a link to a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Finder. This finder can be used to generate a list of Part D providers available in your area.
Find and Compare PDPs
The web page for the Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Finder has a button called "Find & Compare Plans." When you click this button, you will be given two different search options: a personalized search or a general search. The personalized search option requires you to enter the information on your Medicare card. By doing this you will create your own account, which can save your search information and allow you to get your PDP information once you enroll in a plan. With the generalized search, you do not have to insert your Medicare information, although you can locate the same PDP information.
Provider List
After you have chosen a search option on the Find & Compare Plans page, entered your zip code and information regarding your age range, health and current medical insurance, you will be provided with a list of Part D providers in your area. Because PDPs can vary in coverage and premium amounts, you can further personalize your search for a Part D provider by including information in your search regarding the type of prescription drugs you are currently taking. This will provide you with a list of Part D providers that offer PDPs that meet your specific needs. Once you have found a PDP that meets your needs, you can enroll in the PDP on the Medicare website.
Information Assistance
If Medicare's website PDP finder is not convenient for you to use, Medicare provides personalized counseling about Part D providers and PDPs available in your area. This assistance can be obtained by calling 1-800-MEDICARE, or 1-800-633-4227.
