Scars are marks on the skin that occur after an injury, cut or surgery. Scars are caused by the skin healing and repairing itself, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Over time, the appearance of scars may be reduced, depending on the skin or the age of the person and the location of the scar. Scarring can be reduced by home remedies as well, although they are not a substitute for medical treatment.

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera gel can be used to treat and prevent scars. Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and moisturizing properties. Aloe vera can be found in many over-the-counter creams, lotions and gels but can be used in its pure form from the actual aloe vera plant. Using the aloe vera on newly formed scars, injuries and cuts will reduce the amount of inflammation. It will also allow the cut or burn to heal quickly and be less likely to form scars, according to GrannyMed.com.
To use pure aloe vera gel, cut one leaf open from the aloe vera plant. Remove the sticky yellow juice from the leaf and rub it over the affected area. While there is anecdotal evidence for aloe's ability to heal and prevent scars, there is no scientific evidence to validate this.

Lemon Juice

Lemon juice can aid in the treatment of scars. The lemon juice acts as an exfoliant as well as scar lightener. Lemon juice contains citric acid which will remove the old dead skin cells and make way for newer skin. Make sure not to use lemon juice on any open cuts. To use lemon juice for scarring, cleanse the affected area with water first. Rub lemon juice on the scar and allow it to sit for 10 minutes, then rinse. Again, there is no scientific evidence of the efficacy of this approach.

Onion Extract

Onion extract can be used to help with treating scarring. Onion extract has anti-inflammatory properties. It is also purported to help decrease the amount of collagen in the newly forming scar, although this has not been proven. This is important because the overproduction of collagen can cause raised scars, according to GrannyMed.com. Onion extract can be found in gel form in health food stores. It can be placed on the affected area three to four times per day.
