Aromatherapy is a holistic, therapeutic treatment used to relieve stress, which plays a significant role in overall health. It is also used to combat some illnesses, such as the common cold. According to The International Federation of Aromatherapists, oils used for this practice are essences extracted from plants and designed to help balance body systems.
Vaporizing these oils creates a fine mist inhaled by anyone in the room. Aromatherapy not only provides a subtle fragrance but also may improve your mood and sense of well-being. However, there is little in the way of scientific evidence to back the healing properties associated with this therapy.
Step 1
Set up the vaporizer. The process will vary depending on the model vaporizer you own.
Step 2
Place the bulb attachment into the heating element of the vaporizer. The location of the heating element will depend on the model vaporizer. In most cases, it will be sitting around the vaporizing chamber of the unit.
Step 3
Add water to the bulb until it is half-full. Place three of four drops of the essential oil of into the bulb water.
Step 4
Turn the vaporizer on and leave it set to a medium heat. This will be enough to vaporize the oil in the water of the bulb and diffuse it to the air.
Tips and Warnings
- Select an essential oil that you enjoy based on your mood and the way you feel. For example, lavender oil may calm you. Eucalyptus oil may relieve a stuffy nose. See the Resources section for a list of oils and their effects.
- Do not overfill the bulb. The goal is to vaporize the water without letting it touch the heating element. Do not set the heat on the vaporizer high enough to boil the water. Keep the heat from low to medium. Keep this device and any essential oils out of the reach of small children.
