Due to growing concerns about obesity and chemicals in our environment and food sources, many people have turned to various methods of detoxification to cleanse their bodies, remove these toxins and promote weight loss. Although there are many ways to detox, some are more popular or safer than others. If you decide to do a detox, be sure to consult a health professional before beginning any diet or detox program.

Water

When the body is in a state of dehydration, there is not enough water in your body to allow the kidneys to perform their primary function, purifying blood. As your body becomes dehydrated, the workload is passed on from your kidneys to other organs, including your liver. Mild dehydration can cause a variety of side effects such as constipation, dry and itchy skin, nosebleeds, acne, sinus problems, urinary tract infections and headaches.
Using water as a detox weight loss method is actually a fast. The fast is used to stimulate your kidneys, liver and digestive system. By doing this, your metabolism increases and toxins and fat are removed from the body, resulting in weight loss. A water-only fast should not last longer than 48 hours without medical supervision.

Fiber

Using fiber as a detox method to lose weight usually involves increasing the amount of fiber in your diet through eating more fibrous foods. There are some foods that contain fiber. These foods include some vegetables; legumes (such as peas and beans); nuts; and some fruits such as pineapple. By consuming more fiber, you start a detox process in your colon. As the fiber travels through your digestive system, it grows in size and picks up toxic particles and free radicals as it exits your colon and digestive system. Be aware that this will increase your bowel movements but will also increase your energy as the toxins and free radicals are removed from your body.

Master Cleanse

Sometimes called the Lemonade Diet, this detox method involves consuming a combination of fresh lemon juice, grade A maple syrup and cayenne pepper to cleanse the internal organs. The Master Cleanse is a liquid-only fast and is meant to last 10 days. The Master Cleanse is supposed to cause weight loss by removing toxin buildup in the tissues, blood and organs. Before attempting this detox weight loss method, consult your medical provider.
