An aura is a vision disturbance that is considered a warning sign of a migraine. The aura may occur in both eyes and include other symptoms. Auras do not occur with every migraine and in every sufferer. Auras typically develop 10 to 15 minutes before the headache--though they may develop at other times. For some individuals a brief aura takes place within minutes of the migraine, while others may experience the aura an entire day before the onset of the migraine.
Tunnel Vision
Tunnel vision may be present with an aura. This symptom is similar to the temporary blind spot that may occur, as it leaves the individual with a loss of peripheral vision although it occurs on both sides. A migraine sufferer's vision may be slight, resembling a tunnel.
Seeing Stars
Seeing stars or zigzag lines can be linked to an aura. This symptom occurs quickly and may appear to flash before the individual's eyes. For those unfamiliar with this symptom, dismissing it may be easy because of the fleeting nature of this sign.
Eye Pain
When a migraine is looming, an aura may include eye pain. The pain varies with each individual; however, most people liken the pain to sinus pressure.
Blind Spot
A temporary blind spot may occur with an aura. When this occurs, the individual may lose partial vision in a certain area. This commonly affects the peripheral vision, causing a blind spot to occur on one side of the sufferer's sight path.
Blurred Vsison
Blurred vision is a symptom of an oncoming migraine. For those who experience blurred vision, the onset may be sudden and frightening. Vision is not completely lost; however, it may be difficult to see things clearly. Blurred vision may be evident as individuals may squint in an effort to see clearly or decipher written materials.
