Free Home Remedies for Dry Flaky Facial Skin

Dry, flaky facial skin can by itchy and make you feel like you are not looking your best. Unfortunately, the condition is a common occurrence in the winter when the air is dry and cold, and in the summer when there's too much sun. Commercial products to moisturize and exfoliate can be costly, and some of the chemicals are too harsh to use on the delicate skin on your face. Free home remedies for dry, flaky facial skin can introduce moisture to your skin using ingredients you most likely already have in your kitchen pantry.

Gentle Washing

One of the easiest free remedies for your dry face is to wash it without cleansers, using only lukewarm water. Massage your face gently with your fingertips to remove the flaking skin, but don't scrub too hard or you'll risk irritating your face even more. Pat your face dry with a soft towel to avoid creating more flaky spots by roughly rubbing your face dry.

Moisturizing

You can reverse the signs of dry flaking facial skin by moisturizing in three ways: adding a protective layer of moisture to your face, increasing the humidity of the air in your home, and drinking enough water so that you are hydrated from the inside out. Remedying your dry face without spending extra money means being creative. The National Institutes of Health reports that a thick, greasy moisturizer will help your condition the most; use a thin layer of petroleum jelly, a staple in most people's medicine cabinets, to soften the skin on your face.
If you do not already own a humidifier, it's not necessary to go buy one. Set bowls of water on top of the radiator in the winter to create steam, which moistens the air in your house. Run the shower for a few minutes before you plan to bathe, and allow your dry, flaking face to soak up the moisture from the air.
Drinking water plumps up your skin cells and helps keep your skin looking supple and smooth. Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine explains that if you already drink eight glasses of water every day, you most likely will not see a change in your skin condition by drinking more, but if you are not drinking eight glasses, adding a few more may make a difference.

Nourishing

Nourishing your face with an all-natural and free-of-cost mask can add moisture to your skin and relieve the itching and tightness you may experience. Honey is a natural humectant--it attracts moisture and holds onto it-- and emollient that is used in some cultures to speed wound recovery. Honey is also an antioxidant that may be able to control skin damage from UV rays and toxins, according to the website SkinCareResourceCenter.com.
Oatmeal is known for its abilities to sooth itching and skin irritation and is recommended as a bath ingredient for people who suffer from a variety of itchy skin conditions. Making a facial mask with oatmeal and honey, two kitchen staples, may make your face look and feel better. Combine 2 tbsp. dry oats, 1 tbsp. honey and enough water, milk, yogurt or other liquid to make a paste. Apply the paste to dry areas of your face and let it dry; you may need to double the recipe to cover your entire face. Once the mask is dry, wash it off with warm water.
