Migraine Headache Holistic Cures

Holistic cures are effective methods for pain relief that have been used for centuries. In many cases these methods are a healthier alternative to over-the-counter or prescription pain medications, as these drugs may be accompanied by dangerous side effects. Choosing a holistic cure may also be a less expensive option.

Essential Oils

Step 1

Sniff or apply essential oils, such as peppermint oil. Rubbing a diluted oil on the forehead is a method that may provide relief by changing the brain chemistry. As a result, endorphins may be released which can elevate mood and relieve pain.

Step 2

Visualize. Research indicates that bodily functions, formerly thought to be beyond an individual's control, including chronic pain, may be controlled with the use of visualization. Eliminating negative thoughts and focusing on guided imagery may decrease anxiety and increase serotonin. This method is successful for relieving migraine pain in some cases.

Step 3

Eat a well-balanced diet. Including fresh fruits and vegetables in the diet is thought to be an effective way to raise pain thresholds. In addition, a deficiency in some vitamins, such as vitamins A, B, C, D or E, may lead to chronic pain including headaches.

Step 4

Use herbs. Herbal medicine is an important aspect of traditional Chinese medicine. Feverfew is a common herb that may assist with headache pain.

Step 5

Do not overuse prescription medicines. Replacing prescription medicines with the above holistic cures can stop the occurrence of headaches. Rebound headaches often result from overuse of prescription medicines. Holistic remedies utilize natural methods and therefore do not cause a pain cycle.
