Volleyball is a sport that men and women play, either indoors or out. A girls' volleyball team is composed of six players, with the goal of causing the opposing team to let the ball touch the ground. A team scores a point if the opposing team does not return the ball after contacting it a maximum of three times. Rules vary based on the age of the players and the sanctioning body, but many rules remain similar, or identical.
Playing Area/Equipment
Girls' teams play volleyball on a 26 foot, 6 inch by 59 foot court, whether indoors or outdoors. The net hangs at a height of 7 feet, 4 1/8 inches, according to the official rules at the Westlake High School in Ohio. The ball is pressurized between 4 1/2 and 6 ounces, and weighs 9 to 10 ounces.
The Serve
A player must serve the ball to the opposing team either with an underhanded or overhanded serve, and she must serve from behind the boundary line of her team's court. The server may enter the playing area after the ball immediately after the ball is served, according to rules published by the Parochial Athletic League.
Play
Volleyball teams are allowed to touch the ball a maximum of three times before the ball must go over the net to the opposing team. An individual player is not allowed to contact the ball more than once in succession. The ball may be hit by a player anywhere on the body above the waist, as long as the ball is in constant motion. If the ball contacts the net it remains in play. Girls' volleyball is typically played to 25 points, and the winning team must win by at least two points.
