Overview

When you are trying to conceive, it's important to take into consideration the fertility of both you and your partner. A man's fertility is based on the quality, quantity and motility of his sperm. While most couples will conceive within a year of trying, some men have low sperm levels, which can make achieving pregnancy difficult. Fortunately, there are some steps that you can take at home that can increase your sperm level.

Step 1

Be sure that you are getting the nutrients that you need. Take a vitamin that contains zinc, selenium and folic acid. These nutrients will help to improve the quality and quantity of your sperm. Eat foods that are high in antioxidants, such as berries, leafy green vegetables and green tea.

Step 2

Exercise, but only in moderation. Very strenuous or prolonged exercise can cause a a fluctuation in hormones and in your sperm count and motility. Exercise also has the added benefit of reducing stress, which can help raise your sperm level.

Step 3

Lose weight if necessary. If your level of body fat is unhealthily high or low, your hormone levels may not be at a normal level, which can impact sperm levels. If you have a lot of weight to gain or lose, talk to your doctor or a nutritionist about a diet and exercise plan that is safe for you.

Step 4

Avoid vices that are bad for you. Smoking, drinking alcohol and taking drugs can cause your sperm to be malformed, to die off or to swim more slowly. Any of these in combination can wreak havoc on your sperm count.

Step 5

Don't get too overheated. Activities such as taking a hot bath, relaxing in a hot tub, wearing tight underwear, riding a bicycle and sitting for long periods of time can raise your scrotal temperature. This rise in temperature can kill off fragile sperm, lowering your sperm count.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you take any prescription medications, ask your doctor if they may interfere with your sperm count. In some cases, your doctor may prescribe a different medication. If you have been trying to conceive for six months to one year with no results, you and your partner should have medical exams to see if there is a fertility problem.
