The use of herbal remedies for treating disease in children can prove to be an effective alternative or supplementary approach, without the unwanted side effects that sometimes company antibiotics and other prescription medications. Traditional Chinese medicine uses herbs that are safe for children, which include jujube, siler root and bai zhu. It is important to consult your child's pediatrician before replacing any treatment with herbs or any type of alternative treatment, and if they are your first approach, you should do it under the supervision of a licensed acupuncturist.

Jujube

Commonly referred to as Chinese date, jujube seed is botanically known as Semen ziziphi spinosa. It comes from the jujube tree, which is deciduous and can grow up to 40 feet in height. Jujube seeds are used in Traditional Chinese medicine to relieve anxiety and promote relaxation and restful sleep. Jujube seeds are also useful in treating asthma and convulsions, due to their relaxing effects on the muscles. They can be given to children that have trouble winding down from a long day or relaxing at night. Additionally jujube is a useful herbal remedy for kids when it is used to treat congestion in the respiratory tract caused by the common cold, and it also helps soothe internal organs, according to the website MDidea. Make jujube tea each night to help with sleep and relaxation. Always check with your child's doctor about using herbs to treat anxiety and sleeplessness, as well as other disorders with jujube.

Bai Zhu

The Chinese herb bai zhu is known botanically as Atratylodes macrocephala. It is a safe herb to use when treating children, and according to the website Alternative Healing, bai zhu is used to treat drooling in children and it also helps treat digestive disorders including constipation. It improves the immune system, which is useful for preventing infections and disease. Consult your pediatrician regarding bai zhu as a complimentary treatment for your child.

Siler Root

Siler root, known in traditional Chinese medicine as fang feng, comes from a grey cone-shaped plant that can grow up to 12 inches in height. It is used to treat diarrhea, body aches and headaches and is safe to use with children. Diarrhea may cause severe dehydration, and it is best to contact your child's doctor regarding treatment, before taking siler root in order to obtain proper dosage and learn of any contraindications that may be present regarding other medications your child may be taking simultaneously.
