Having sleek, shiny hair doesn't have to break the bank. If your locks have been feeling more like straw than hair, you don't have to use an expensive salon conditioner or a shampoo full of chemicals to get results. Instead, pick some herbs from your garden and make a natural hair treatment that will infuse your hair with shine and bounce.

Horsetail Shampoo

Horsetail contains silica, which helps strengthen hair and add shine, says Kori Ellis in an article on health and beauty website, SheKnows.com. Ellis suggests making a horsetail shampoo by placing 3 tbsp. of horsetail in 1/2 cup of boiling water. Let it sit until the mixture cools, then add it to a bottle of baby shampoo. Each time you shower, use the horsetail shampoo instead of your regular shampoo to keep your hair shiny.

Chamomile Conditioner

Mix up your own chamomile conditioner to help hydrate dry hair and add shine, says Kathi Keville, author of "Herbs for Health and Healing." Boil one pint of water, then pour it over a bowl containing one tsp. calendula flowers, one tsp. chamomile flowers, one tsp. burdock root, one tsp. rosemary leaves and one tsp. lavender flowers. Allow the mixture to sit for 30 minutes, then strain the herbs out and add one tbsp. vinegar. After shampooing, pour the mixture on the hair and do not rinse it out.

Rosemary Hot Oil Treatment

Keville suggests using a rosemary hot oil treatment periodically to help infuse shine into dull hair. Mix two oz. aloe vera gel, two oz. castor oil, six drops of rosemary essential oils, six drops of rose geranium cedar and two drops of ginger essential oil. Heat the mixture on the stove for several minutes until the oil is warm but not too hot. Apply the warm oil to dry hair, then wrap the hair in a towel, says Keville. Leave the mixture on for two hours, then get in the shower to rinse the hair. Shampoo and condition as your normally would.
