The metabolism may be the force behind weight loss, or the hindrance to it. A speedy metabolism will result in fast burning of calories and increased energy. For those with a slow metabolism, weight loss may be difficult. There are, however, ways to speed up the rate at which the metabolism operates.
Step 1
Exercise with weights. Weight training can be an effective way to build muscle, which will allow for your body to burn more calories even when you're inactive. A pound of muscle can burn approximately nine times more calories than a pound of fat.
Step 2
Eat breakfast. Waking your metabolism up from a long night of rest requires giving your body food, or fuel. If you don't, your body may go into starvation mode. When this occurs, your metabolism slows to conserve energy.
Step 3
Manage stress. Managing stress is important to lose and maintain healthy weight because abundant stress can increase the hormone cortisol, stalling the metabolism and leading to excess weight. While avoiding stress may be impossible in certain scenarios, managing stress can be done with various strategies such as exercise (specifically yoga), meditation or prayer and learning to balance work with enjoyable activities.
Step 4
Add ice to your beverages. Sipping cold drinks may help your body burn extra calories, as the body works to regulate the temperature of the beverage. Water is the most beneficial beverage, as it contains no calories, sodium or carbonation.
Step 5
Eat Protein. Research reveals that protein can boost the metabolism due to the amino acid content, which is more difficult for the body to break down.
