Cerebral palsy is a non-progressive neurological disorder that develops during the first few years of life. Individuals with cerebral palsy can suffer from symptoms including decreased muscle coordination, difficulty with speech, spasticity and tremors. Physical activity can benefit adults with cerebral palsy and can significantly improve their quality of life. Certain activities can be harmful, though. Always consult their physician to determine which activities are appropriate for their specific condition.
Arm Cycling
This activity works the upper extremities and promotes cardiovascular health. It is similar to bicycling but the arms perform the pedaling motion as opposed to the legs. It can be performed indoors with an arm ergometer or outdoors with an arm-driven cycle.
Chair Aerobics
Chair aerobics focus on upper body movements and can increase flexibility and cardiovascular endurance among those with cerebral palsy. This activity can be performed in a group setting using a cushioned chair and fun music. During exercise, the individual's heart rate, breathing rate, posture and joint motion must be monitored.
Dancing
Dancing promotes cardiovascular health and engages the entire body. It is performed to music while the individual stays within a predetermined heart rate zone. The intensity of this activity can be adjusted by either increasing or decreasing the tempo of the music. Breathing intensity, amount of joint motion and posture need to be monitored while the individual dances.
Resistance Band Exercises
Resistance band exercises help stretch and strengthen the muscles of individuals with cerebral palsy. They are made in a variety of sizes and resistances to accommodate for almost any person. Attach one end to a secure object and the other to the body part you wish to exercise.
Walking
Walking helps promote cardiovascular health and lower extremity strength. Individuals that require an assistive device can use their cane, crutches or walker if needed. Exercise intensity should not be excessive and walking surfaces should not be too hard in order to limit impact on the joints.
Water Exercise
Water exercise benefits individuals with cerebral palsy since it can deliver similar health benefits as exercise on land with less strain on the body. Water exercise programs should incorporate all major areas of the body and the intensity should be gradually progressed as tolerated. When exercising in water, always assure that safety equipment is worn and that the water temperature is between 80 degrees and 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
