Face Creams Containing Retinol

Retinol is natural vitamin A, which is used to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and smooth the skin. It is also used to treat acne. Retinol unclogs the pores and works to keep them clear. Retinoid derivatives are synthetic forms of retinol and are available by prescription only. Retinol creams work by increasing cell division and generating new collagen for firmer skin, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.

Topical Tretinoin

Topical tretinoin is available by prescription through a dermatologist. It comes in gel, cream and liquid form. It is often prescribed to treat acne. Brand names that contain topical tretinoin include Avita, Renova Emollient, Retin-A and Retin-A Micro. Tretinoin is used for its antiaging properties and treatment for repairing photoaged skin. Side effects include red, scaly skin; stinging or skin warmth; and swelling, blistering and lightening or darkening of the skin.

Roc Retinol Correxion Creams

Roc Multi-Correxion treatment creams contain retinol and a blend of antioxidants that include vitamin C, squalane, copper and zinc. The Multi-Correxion line includes, eye, face, night and day creams. The product claims to reduce fine lines, wrinkles, improve skin tone and brightness. The listed side effects include slight redness and/or tingling.

Clinique RCXR+De-Aging Cream

Clinique's products are allergy tested and do not contain fragrances. They are sold online or in major department stores. Clinique's CXR+De-Aging Cream is a retinol line to treat the signs of aging. The advertising claims that it fights wrinkles and jump-starts natural collagen production. The CXR+De-Aging Cream line includes, day, night and eye creams. Other Clinique retinol products include Zero Gravity Firming Cream and Clinique Firming Cream.

Retinol Precautions

Retinol products cause sun sensitivity. A broad-spectrum sunblock with a sun protection factor of 30 or higher should be used in conjunction with creams that contain retinol. Avoid excessive exposure to the sun and wear protective clothing. Synthetic retinoids such as tretinoin may cause birth defects and pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should not use these products, according to the American Academy of Dermatology.
