Prom is one of the most important high school events, and you want to look your best. Unfortunately, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, 85% of teenagers in the United States will suffer from acne within a single year due to fluctuations in hormone levels. For some unlucky teens, these blemishes strike right before the big dance. You'll want to pull out the big guns in skincare before prom to ensure your skin is flawless for the big event.
10 Weeks Out or More
The American Academy of Dermatology notes there is no overnight cure for acne, and treatment can take four to eight weeks or more. Changing skincare routines can cause acne, so you want to start a new routine as far out from prom as possible and then maintain the same routine. If you are suffering from severe acne that covers large areas of skin or appears in the form of cysts or nodules, you should consider consulting a dermatologist.
Daily Skin Care
A daily skincare plan includes caring for your skin in the morning and in the evening before you go to sleep. You can purchase an all-in-one treatment system such as ProActiv or the Exposed Acne Treatment system, which received the Acne Support Team Editor’s Choice Award. If purchased individually, you need a mild cleanser, acne treatment and moisturizer. Acne treatments should include 2-percent benzoyl peroxide or 5-percent tea tree oil, and moisturizers and make-up should be labeled “oil-free” or “non-comedogenic” with sunscreen included.
Diet and Vitamins
It has never been proven that chocolate or French fries cause acne, but it’s easy for the grease to transfer from the food to acne-prone skin around your mouth. It has been proven, however, that eating a well-balanced diet complete with proper water intake will help clear and prevent acne. Celebrity Beauty Tip Goldmine also reports that celebrities are increasing foods high in zinc and vitamin C plus sprinkling a little flaxseed oil on their salads to treat acne spots. Zinc can be found in such foods as meats, beans and milk. Vitamin C can be found in almost all citrus fruits, such as oranges, lemons and limes.
Zeno
Consider having a Zeno on hand for the night before to treat last-minute blemishes. No matter what you’ve done to prevent acne and how long you’ve done it for, hormones and anxiety before the big night can cause a zit to form the night before, or worse, show itself the morning of. Zeno is a handheld device created to treat individual zits by heating up the skin, killing the bacteria causing the infection. It is proven to help reduce and eliminate pimples within 24 hours and often shows dramatic improvement within hours.
