Emergencies, big or small, can happen anytime, anyplace. Many Americans spend at least two hours per day in the car. You better prepare yourself and your family by building a personal first aid kit for the car. Here are some suggestions on how to customize it.
Step 1
Start with a basic first aid kit that contains items like Band-Aids, antiseptic wipes, first aid ointment such as Neosporin, gauze and bandages of varying sizes.
Step 2
Think about you and your family's medical needs.
Step 3
Gather items to meet those needs (e.g. extra supplies of medications, glasses, diapers or formula or an extra set of clothes).
Step 4
Package the items in an easy-to-carry container such as a backpack or duffel bag.
Step 5
Educate your family on the contents and what they are used for and when, then place your personal first aid kit in the car.
Tips and Warnings
- Consider including a list of doctors' and specialists' phone numbers in case of a more extreme emergency. Examine your kit at the change of each season to refresh items as needed and add any new items that you may need.
- Store your kit in a part of the car that is temperature controlled. Extreme heat or cold will change the effectiveness of some supplies.
Things You'll Need
- Pen
- Paper
- Temperature tolerant container to store the items for your kit (contents will vary)
