Overview

BMI, or body mass index, is a number used by medical professionals to classify individuals as underweight, normal, overweight or obese. BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. Using weight in kilograms and height in meters squared, a number is calculated which is the BMI. The conversions are easy and if you only have your height in centimeters BMI can still be determined.

Step 1

Determine your weight in kilograms. If you only have your weight in pounds, divide this number by 2.2. This will give you weight in kilograms. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds that would be 68kg.

Step 2

Take your height in centimeters and divide this number by 100. This will give you your height in meters. For example, if your height is 165cm, then you should divide that by 100 you get 1.65m.

Step 3

Take your height in meters and square it, or multiply it by itself. For example, 1.65 meters x 1.65 meters = 2.72.

Step 4

Divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. Using the above example, this would be 68 divided by 2.72.

Step 5

Consider this number your BMI. The example here results in a BMI of 25.

Tips and Warnings

  • BMI is classified into one of four categories. A BMI of 30.0 and above is obese, 25 to 29.9 is overweight, 18.5 to 24.9 is normal weight and under 18.5 is considered underweight.
  • While BMI is generally a good indicator when it comes to weight and health risk, it is not perfect. People with a large amount of muscle mass may have a BMI that classifies them as obese, yet they are healthy. In addition, those who fall around the break off point for overweight and normal weight and practice healthy habits may not be at risk for disease, even though they are considered overweight based on BMI.
